How to Change a Bedroom Doorknob
Your bedroom doorknob may need to be changed due to wear and tear, or because it no longer fits the decor of the room. Bedroom doorknobs are less complicated to change than heavy-duty entry locks and consist of only one shaft that turns to open the latch and a locking mechanism, if your particular doorknob has one. Removing and replacing your doorknob is a straightforward task requiring only basic tools and minimal skill. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Use your tape measure to note the distance between the edge of your bedroom door and the center point of your doorknob handle. The measurement should be 2-3/8 inches or 2-3/4 inches. Check that your replacement doorknob matches your current knob measurements.
-
2
Inspect the sleeve around the neck of your doorknob for screws. The screws should be located on the interior side of the door but check on both sides. If you see the screws, use your screwdriver to remove them by turning in a counterclockwise direction. If you do not see screws, check the bottom of the neck portion of your doorknob for a small tab or hole.
Use your small flathead screwdriver to release the doorknob by pressing down the tab or releasing the catch inside the hole. Place one hand on the knob at each side of the door and pull the two knobs out at the same time.

Use a flathead screwdriver to lift and remove the round plate covering the doorknob hole. Find the screws that hold the latch unit in place along the open edge of the door. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws and use pliers to remove the latch unit from the door.

Locate the strike plate on the inside of the door frame. Use your screwdriver to remove the strike plate. Install your new strike plate in place of it with the new screws provided in the packaging. Begin the removal steps in reverse order to install your new doorknob.

5
Install your new latch unit into the rectangular opening along the open edge of your door. Fasten it in place using your screwdriver and the screws provided.
-
6
Slide the new doorknob through the latch unit and into the door, with the lock switch facing your bedroom. Slide the new blank knob into the door hole and through the latch unit from the outside. The two knobs should slide into one another easily.
Use the screwdriver to install the long anchor screws into the base of both doorknobs and through the latch unit inside the door. With the doorknobs fastened in place, test the door by opening and shutting, turning both knobs, and locking and unlocking.
