How to Install a Fluidmaster Overflow Kit
The Fluidmaster overflow kit is the entire flush valve system. It consists of the overflow tube, the flapper and the flush valve. The flush valve allows water to fill the bowl when flushing the toilet. The overflow tube helps prevent the tank from overflowing if there is a problem with the fill valve. Installing a Fluidmaster overflow kit in place of a faulty flush system requires removing the tank from the toilet. Does this Spark an idea?

Remove Old Flush Valve
-
1
Turn off the water supply to the toilet tank using the cut-off valve behind the toilet. Remove the tank lid and set it on the floor out of your way. Flush the toilet and hold the flush lever down to drain as much water out of the tank as possible. Soak up the remaining water with towels.
-
2
Rotate the water supply line connection at the bottom of the toilet tank counterclockwise with a pair of slip joint pliers. The water line connects to the fill valve under the toilet tank.
-
-
3
Place a large flat-head screwdriver into the head of one of the toilet tank bolts inside the bottom of the tank. Loosen and remove the securing nut under the tank with a socket wrench while holding the head of the bolt with the screwdriver. Repeat for the opposite bolt. Inspect the rubber washers under the tank bolt heads. Replace them if they have cracks or deterioration.
-
4
Lift the toilet tank away from the bowl flange and place it on its side on a flat surface. Pull off the tank gasket that fits over the bottom of the flush valve. Hold the overflow pipe with one hand while loosening the large securing nut on the outside bottom of the toilet tank with a pipe wrench in your free hand.
-
5
Clean the inside surface of the toilet tank with a damp rag. Slime and sediment might prevent good seals when installing the new overflow kit.
Install Fluidmaster Overflow Kit
-
6
Insert the Fluidmaster overflow kit into the inside center hole of the toilet tank. The overflow tube should be nearest to the rear wall of the toilet tank. The cup gasket below the flapper assembly should be slightly inset into the hole.
-
7
Thread the large securing nut over the exposed overflow kit threads below the toilet tank until it is hand tight. Turn the nut another 1/2-turn using the pipe wrench. Push the toilet tank gasket over the overflow kit threads with the angled end pointing away from the tank. The top of the gasket should fit flush against the securing nut.
-
8
Position the tank over the bowl flange, lining up the mounting holes. Insert the tank bolts through the mounting holes inside the tank. Place flat washers over the bolt threads and thread the securing nuts until they are hand tight. Tighten the nuts another 3/4-turn using the socket wrench. The rubber washers below the tank bolt threads should be slightly compressed but not folding over the bolt heads.
-
9
Reattach the water supply line to the fill valve threads below the toilet tank. When the connection is hand tight, turn it another 1/2-turn using the slip joint pliers. Position the fill valve water tube over the top of the overflow pipe. Turn the water supply on slowly, and watch for leaks around your connections.
-
10
Place the toilet tank lid on the tank after you verify all connections are leak free.
