How to Close the Dock on a Mac

Apple released Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion" in 2011.

On Mac computers, the Dock is an application launcher and task manager that displays program icons at the bottom of the screen. While the Dock is displayed, it consumes a portion of the screen's space and prevents you from maximizing windows fully. The Dock is a required component of Mac OS X, and it is required for functions such as Expose to work properly. However, you can close the Dock by configuring it to retract automatically when you are not using it. After closing the dock, it appears only when you move the mouse pointer to the bottom of the screen.

Instructions

    • 1

Right-click an open area of the Dock, and select "Dock Preferences." Alternatively, click the Apple logo in the upper-left corner of the window, select "System Preferences," then click the "Dock" icon under the "Personal" heading.

    • 2

Click to place a check in the "Automatically hide and show the Dock" box. The Dock immediately retracts out of view.

    • 3

Move the mouse pointer to the bottom of the window to show the Dock. If you have moved the dock to one of the sides of the screen, move the mouse pointer to that side to show the Dock.

    • 4

Close the Dock Preferences window to save your settings.
