Instructions

    • 1

Cover a small dining table with a white linen or silk table cloth. If your regular dining table is family-sized, use a round bridge table. The table itself won't show, and a smaller table is more intimate and romantic. Invest in a quality table cloth to use for Valentine's dinner and other times when you want to set a nice table. Cover the tablecloth with a white or ivory lace or crocheted topper. White on white is festive, yet understated.

Call a florist and ask if they sell boxes of loose rose petals. Sprinkle these around the center of the table as the base for your centerpiece. If you can't get your hands on fresh petals, buy silk roses and cut the petals from them.

Fill three vases in descending heights with flowers and set these in the center of the table. The different sizes add interest and dimension to the center place. Place votive candles inside small glass jelly jars and place these around the vases. The jelly jars sparkle when candles are lit, and the surprising bit of humbleness amongst your best linens and china adds a nice touch to the table. Match the candles to your flowers, or use white to match the linens.

Set the table with your finest china. If you don't own special dishes, buy just two place settings to use for special couple-only dinners. Use crystal goblets and wine glasses and real silver as well. If you can't afford to buy everything at once, visit thrift stores or auction sites to search out pieces you like at a bargain. Mismatched pieces work together if the styles and colors are similar.

Set a linen napkin diagonally and start to fold it accordion style, back and forth, from one side corner to the next. Fold the long, narrow, folded napkin in half width wise and insert the folded end into a wine glass. Fan out the edges.
