How to Apply an Enamel Applique
Enamel appliques are brightly-hued images composed of enamel paint on a metal backing. People in central Eurasia, especially Russia and India, have used these elements decoratively for generations. In the western marketplace, the colorful logos or images affixed to metallic objects, such as a school logo on a metal mug, are enamel appliques. Affixing something to metal may seem impossible, but, with the right adhesive, it is as straightforward as gluing two pieces of paper together.
Things You'll Need

1
Purchase an adhesive or epoxy meant for gluing metal. You may need to go to a hardware store or automotive store to find a product strong enough to bind your applique to the desired surface. Cold weld adhesives will work, as well.
-
2
Select an enamel applique and surface that have the same contours. For example, you cannot affix a flat applique to the curved surface of a mug effectively. Ensure both pieces fit together naturally.
-
-
3
Rub each surface with steel wool to remove any dirt, rust or unevenness.
-
4
Work in an area with superior ventilation once you begin using the adhesive.
-
5
Put gloves on before opening the adhesive. Wear gloves to protect your skin but do not limit your manual dexterity.
-
6
Apply the adhesive to the backside of the applique, according to the manufacturer's instructions. Instructions vary by product, but the process will be similar to using any other adhesive.
-
7
Press the applique to the surface on which you are affixing it.
-
8
Open a metal clamp or vice. Position the applique and surface in the open portion of the tool. Tighten the clamp or vice as tight as you can, without damaging the applique or other item. Place a cotton facial pad between the clamp, applique or surface, if necessary.
-
9
Allow the epoxy time to dry and bind, according to the manufacturer's instructions. The adhesive may need as much as 24 hours to adhere completely.
-
10
Remove the clamp or vice.
