Cover a small square pillow with pleated ribbon ruffles to make a tailored ring bearer pillow. Four rows of pleated ribbon add a couture effect to this elegant pillow that is not the least bit frilly or fussy. Instructions

    • 1

Cut four 9-inch lengths of pleated ribbon trim.

    • 2

Lay one piece of trim on the table with the band that holds the pleats on the right side. Place the band on a second piece of trim over the band on this one. The second piece should have the band on the left side, so the ruffles stick out on each side of the overlapping bands.

    • 3

Sew the ribbons together by sewing down the middle of the overlapping bands.

    • 4

Cut a 9-inch-by-5-inch rectangle of fabric.

    • 5

Place the fabric right side down on an ironing board. Iron in a 1/2-inch fold on both of the long sides.

    • 6

Pin one of the remaining pieces of pleated ribbon trim along one of the long edges of the fabric. The ruffle should extend 1/2 inch over the folded edge.

    • 7

Sew the trim to the fabric and the remaining piece of trim to the other side in the same way. Sew the double ruffle you made earlier down the middle of the fabric between the other two ruffles. The edges of this ruffle will cover the bands of the side ruffles.

    • 8

Fold the fabric in half perpendicular to the ribbons with the ribbons on the inside. Sew the edge opposite the fold closed by sewing 1/2 inch from the edge. You will be sewing the ends of the ribbon into the seam.

    • 9

Turn the resulting fabric tube right side out so the ribbon is on the outside. Place the seam in the center of the back side of the tube. Fold back the ruffle on one side and sew the folded edges of the fabric together by stitching 1/4 inch from the edge.

    • 10

Stuff the pillow with fiberfill. Sew the remaining open side closed in the same way you closed the opposite side.

    • 11

Cut a 16-inch length of 1/4-inch ribbon and tie it around the pillow, covering the bands of the double row of trim in the center of the pillow. Knot the ribbon in the center of the top side of the pillow and secure it with a few stitches. Tie the ribbon in a bow when you attach the rings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a colorful ribbon to add an accent color to the pillow.

  • Bakery supply stores sell inexpensive golden rings. Use these on the pillow to insure the real rings do not get lost.
