DIY Square Style Floor Cushions

Choose a fabric that is close to the color of the floor.

Floor pillows are a space-saving way to provide extra seating. Sew large square pillows that make sitting on the floor more comfortable. Provide a stack of square floor pillows in a corner of your den to allow your teen's whole soccer team to eat pizza in comfort. Choose a sturdy fabric for the cushions, such as ripstop nylon or denim. Use several colors of the same fabric to give the pillows a unified look that will not dominate the decor.

Things You'll Need

• Sturdy fabric
• Yardstick
• Pins
• Sewing machine
• Square pillow form (24 inches)

Instructions

1. Cut two 25-inch squares of sturdy fabric.

2. Lay one square on the floor with the right side up. Lay the other square on top of it with the right side down. Pin the squares together around the edges.

3. Sew around all the edges of the squares, 1/2 inch from the edge, leaving a 15-inch opening in the middle of one side for turning. Sew square corners by sewing all the way to the corner and stopping with the needle down in the fabric. Raise the pressure foot, turn the fabric 90 degrees to sew down the next side. Lower the pressure foot and continue sewing.

4. Cut off the corners of the seam allowances at a 45-degree angle. The seam allowance is the fabric that extends beyond the seam. Cut close to the seam without cutting through it.

5. Turn the pillow cover right side out and iron it. Fold in the raw edges of the opening and iron the fold to make it easier to sew the opening closed.

6. Insert the pillow form into the cover. Reach inside the cover and pull the corners of the form into the corners of the cover.

7. Sew the opening closed by machine stitching the folded edges together, 1/8 inch from the folds.

Tips & Warnings

• Sew tassels to the corners of the pillow.
