DIY Velcro Pillows

Change a pillow from matching white to colorful with a new front.

Sew up a Velcro throw pillow with several different pillow fronts. Changing your decor with the seasons is as simple as pulling the front off a throw pillow and replacing it with a different front. In the summer, use white cotton fronts on basic blue throw pillows for a crisp, cool look. Change the fronts to a warm golden color in the autumn. Use fronts with a beaded holiday pattern in December. The flat fabric fronts require much less storage space than an entire set of pillows. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two 13-inch squares of plain twill fabric.

    • 2

Cut two 12-inch pieces and two 11-inch pieces of 1/2-inch-wide Velcro.

    • 3

Separate the hook side of the Velcro from the loop side. Pin the hook side around the edges of the right side of one of the fabric squares, 1/2 inch from the edge. Place the two longer strips on opposite sides. Run the shorter strips between them along the other two sides. The strips will form a square.

    • 4

Sew the Velcro to the fabric by stitching along both edges of the Velcro.

    • 5

Place the remaining fabric square right side down over the Velcro and sew the squares together by stitching 1/2 inch from the edges of the fabric. Leave an 8-inch opening in the center of one side for turning.

    • 6

Clip the corner of the seam allowances at a 45-degree angle, cutting close to the corner without cutting the seam. Turn the pillow cover right side out. Insert a 12-inch-square pillow form into the Velcro cover and sew the opening closed.

    • 7

Cut two 15-inch squares from decorative fabric for the pillow front. Sew the squares together as you sewed the front and back of the pillow together. Turn the pillow front right side out sew the opening closed. Iron the pillow front flat.

    • 8

Pin the loop side of the Velcro you used earlier to the back side of the pillow front, 1 1/2 inch from the edges. Sew through both layers of fabric to attach the Velcro to the pillow front. You may make a single seam down the center of the Velcro or sew along both edges.

    • 9

Lay the pillow front on the front of the pillow, pressing the velcro together. The pillow front will extend 1 inch beyond the edges of the pillow.

Tips & Warnings

  • Match the pillow fabric to the sofa or bedspread for maximum versatility.

  • Applique lace or sew a cutwork pattern in the center of a pillow front, sewing through both layers of fabric. Cut out the fabric behind the lace or inside the cutwork pattern so that the fabric of the pillow will show through.

  • Decorate the edges of the pillow front with ribbons, rickrack or ruffles.
