How to Become an Oilfield Fisherman

A fisherman keeps the well open so the driller can do his job.

Working in an oilfield requires focus and dedication to insure the safety of yourself, your co-workers and the general public. No matter how careful a crew may be sometimes a tool breaks and obstructs a well. This stops production immediately. Then, it is all up to the fisherman. It is the fisherman's job to use special tools to clear obstructed wells and allow production to resume. You can join the best of the best as an oilfield fisherman once you have the education and experience to understand the process.

Instructions

1. Obtain a bachelor's degree from your local college or university. Geology and engineering are basic knowledge for an oil platform worker. A degree is not necessary to work on an oil rig, but, without one you will not advance as quickly to the position you seek.

2. Work on an oil rig to gain experience. Start as a laborer and work your way up to the driller. Work as a lead driller for five years to gain enough seniority to move ahead.

3. Apply for an entry-level position on the fishing crew. Work closely with your supervisor and teammates to learn the basics of each of the pieces of fishing equipment.

4. Practice with each of the cutting and retrieval tools under the supervision of an experienced member of the fishing crew. Become proficient with each of the specialized tools under various conditions to become an expert.

5. Work your way through the ranks of the fishing crew to the position of fisherman. Take the necessary safety training classes from your company to become certified as a fisherman.

• Working on an oil rig is hazardous. Always rely on your training and your co-workers. Never attempt to perform your job under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
