You need to fertilize houseplants during their growing season, which is spring and summer.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Select a liquid fertilizer formulated for houseplants, and use it as directed during the growing season (spring and summer).
Step2
Add the concentrated fertilizer directly to the watering can.
Step3
Remove a plant from its saucer and place it in an area where water can run freely through the soil, such as in a sink or bathtub.
Step4
Pour the fertilizer solution onto the surface of the soil. Make sure it flows from the pot's drainage hole.
Step5
Allow the water to drain through the pot thoroughly before replacing the plant on its saucer.
Step6
Consider another method: Use a slow-release fertilizer in the form of granules or spikes. Apply the product according to label directions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't fertilize more than is recommended, or you may burn your plants or get a salt buildup on the clay pot.
  • Try not to get any fertilizer on the foliage; it may burn the leaves and cause spots.
