How to Create a Pre-Tied Obi
An obi is the sash that is worn with a traditional kimono. It dates back to the 17th century, but it was not until the 19th century that it became the wide and decorative bow that is still worn today. The obi was originally tied at the front, but as it grew in size, it became traditional to tie the bow at the back of the kimono. Like tying a bowtie correctly, tying an obi takes skill and time. The pre-tied obi was developed as a time-saver.
Things You'll Need
- Tape measure
- Scissors
- Fabric
- Interfacing
- Sewing machine
- Self-adhesive Velcro
- Hairspray
- Sewing needle
- Thread
Instructions

1
Measure the waist of the person that will wear the obi.
-
2
Cut one strip of fabric and one strip of interfacing 80-inches long and 17-inches wide. This will make the bow of the obi
-
-
3
Cut one strip of fabric and one strip of interfacing the length of the person's waist measurement, plus four-inches for a seam allowance and 17-inches wide. This will be the waistband to which the bow is attached.
-
4
Fold the longest strip in half lengthwise, with the right-side of the fabric facing in. Sew the longest side together, so that you have made a fabric tube. Turn the tube, so that the right-side of the fabric is facing outwards. Repeat this process with the shorter length of fabric.
-
5
Drop the longest length of interfacing into the longest tube. Iron the interfacing in place. Repeat this process with the shorter length of fabric and interfacing. This will give the fabric stability and strength and will hold the shape of the bow when it is being worn.
-
6
Turn each end of the fabric in on itself and sew the end closed. Repeat this process with the shorter length. You now have two strips of fabric.
-
7
Wrap the waistband around the waist and place a 5-inch Velcro strip vertically, so that it secures the waistband comfortably around the wearer's waist. Place this opening at the front or the back, where the bow will cover it.
-
8
Tie the bow with your long length of fabric. Use a hairspray can -- or similar item like a rolling pin -- around which to tie the bow. This will give you something to press against. Pull the bow into shape, until you are satisfied with it.
-
9
Stabilize the bow with a few stitches, to make sure that it will not untie itself.
-
10
Stick a strip of Velcro to the back of the bow and attach it to the waistband of your kimono.
