How to Mod Your Backpack in "Borderlands"
The video game "Borderlands" combines the role playing game (RPG) with the first person shooter (FPS) to form what its developer, Gearbox Software, calls a “role-playing shooter.” The revolutionary game first graced North American store shelves in October 2009, with versions for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Playing the game touted as having the most unique weapons ever, you may want to modify your backpack in "Borderlands" to hold extra weapons and parts.
Things You'll Need
- Portable storage device compatible with your gaming system (if using PS3 or Xbox 360)
- PC or Mac to edit files
- Hex editor and calculator software
- Rehasher software
- WillowTree software (optional)
Instructions
-
Manual Method
-
1
Save your game, and copy the game save information file to your portable storage device. Then, copy the save file to a folder on your computer.
-
2
Open the file in a hex editor, such as HxD Hex Editor or Gibbed's Save Game Editor (see Resources).
-
-
3
Search for the value that represents the current maximum capacity of your inventory. Do this by pressing “Ctrl+F” on your keyboard. Choose “Hex Values” in the “Type” drop-down menu, enter the capacity in the “Value” box, and then click “OK.”
-
4
Convert the value to whatever you want. The maximum possible number of inventory slots in your backpack is 65,535, which is represented by the Hex code “FF FF.”
-
5
Save the new version of your character information file by clicking “File” and then “Save.”
Prepare the file to be reintroduced to the game by opening it in a hash block calculator, such as CONcept Rehasher and Resigner or Warbo's Rehasher (see Resources). -
6
Click “Tools” and then “Calculate Hash Blocks.” Save the file once again.
-
7
Move the file back to your portable storage device, overwriting the old version if necessary. Load the new file from your portable storage next time you start "Borderlands" to see your new backpack capacity.
WillowTree Method
-
8
Download WillowTree onto your computer (see Resources).
-
9
Save your game, and transfer the file to your portable storage device. Transfer the file to your computer.
-
10
Open the WillowTree software. Click the circular “Wt” icon on the top left of the screen, click “Open” and then choose the file from your hard drive.
-
11
Click the “General Information” tab, and then change the “Backpack Space” category to your desired number of slots.
-
12
Click the “Wt” icon again, and then “Save.” Transfer the file back to your gaming system (if using PS3 or Xbox 360) and load it.

Tips & Warnings
Use WillowTree instead of the manual method, unless you prefer to deal with raw codes and hex values. WillowTree is a program designed specifically for modifying "Borderlands" game save files. It presents all of the data in a save file from the game in an easy to read and edit format, and therefore makes the hex editor, hex calculator and rehasher unnecessary.
