How to Cut Wispy Sideburns for Women

How to Cut Wispy Sideburns for Women thumbnail
Women with short hair must take care when trimming the sideburns.

Women with short hairstyles have to decide how to trim their sideburns so that the hairstyle still looks feminine without hanging oddly from the rest of the hairstyle. One of the simplest ways to trim sideburns and still retain a feminine outline is to cut the sideburns in a wispy style. This prevents the sideburns from lying in a straight edge shape like most men’s sideburn styles. Cutting your own sideburns is difficult, but you can instruct your hairdresser to use a wispy technique at your next salon visit. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the sideburns while the hair is still dry. Pull the side hair away from the face with a comb. Hold the hair between your fingers.

    • 2

Cut the sideburns slightly longer than the desired length with scissors. Taper the joint between the sideburns and the hair on the rest of the head to prevent a choppy, visible line between the hair and sideburns.

    • 3

Slide the edge of a razor across the surface of the hair to eliminate the bulk of the hair. The razor will eliminate about half of the hair thickness. Do not cut through all of the strands to keep the wispy look.

    • 4

Hold the hair between your fingers again. Cut small notches into the hair ends with the scissors. This will give the sideburns a textured, wispy look.

    • 5

Make any additional trimming with thinning shears. This will finalize the wispy look and blend the sideburns seamlessly into the rest of the hairstyle.
