How to Level a Driveway

How to Level a Driveway thumbnail
Prevent cracks from ruining your driveway.

Wear and tear and expanding tree roots, along with weather changes and erosion, can put strain on your driveway. Although it is nearly impossible to guarantee that your driveway won't crack or buckle over time, you can easily restore it to its original condition by leveling it. Leveling is important because doing nothing will just make matters worse. As cracks begin to appear, water gets into your driveway, expanding them as temperatures drop. Leveling will stop these cracks from growing and preserve the integrity of your driveway. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any mold, mildew or dirt from your driveway, using a pressure washer. Add masonry cleaning solution to the washer and spray the surface of your driveway. Wash the solution off with the washer, making sure to clean out all the dirt from the cracks.

    • 2

Mix concrete resurfacer in a bucket with water, following the directions on the specific brand you have purchased. Mix it with a mixing paddle until the consistency is thick.

    • 3

Apply the resurfacer by pouring it over the cracks. Push the mixture in the cracks and level it off, using a trowel.

    • 4

Let the mixture dry. Most mixtures require you to leave them at least overnight to dry sufficiently.

    • 5

Mix a new batch of resurfacer in the morning, but make it much thinner this time. Wet the concrete lightly with some water. Spread the resurfacer over the concrete with a rubber squeegee.

    • 6

Use a broom to smooth over the resurfacer to give the driveway an even look. Allow it to dry for six hours before you walk on the driveway, and wait at least 24 hours before you park a car on it.
