How to Launch GIMP After Installing MacPorts

MacPorts is a program that facilitates the installation of other open-source software with an easy-to-use interface. MacPorts requires the Apple Xcode suite to be installed. Xcode is available for free from the Mac App Store utility. With MacPorts installed, you can install and run programs such as the GNU Image Manipulation Program, or GIMP. MacPorts has more than 12,000 open-source programs in its collection at the date of publication. MacPorts is designed to run with a command-line interface; you can access GIMP through the Terminal after MacPorts is installed.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a Terminal session by clicking "Terminal" in the Utilities folder.

    • 2

Type "sudo port install gimp" and then press "Return." Enter the system password. Perform this step only if you have not already installed GIMP from the MacPorts collection. Installation may take more than an hour as GIMP is compiled from the source code exclusively for your Mac setup.

    • 3

Open a new Terminal session from the Utilities folder.

    • 4

Type "gimp" without quotes, and then press "Return." This forces GIMP to launch in a new X11 session.
