How to Calculate an Annual Salary Based on Net Income
Net income, simply stated, is the actual amount of your payroll check or direct deposit on payday. This figure is calculated by taking your gross salary amount and deducting the appropriate amount for mandatory federal and state taxes, Social Security withholding and voluntary deductions such as health insurance premiums and retirement account contributions. With this being said, it is fairly straightforward to use your net income amount to determine your annual gross salary amount.

Review your statement of earnings, also referred to as a pay stub, to view your net pay amount. This is the actual amount of your paycheck once all of your deductions have been subtracted from your gross amount.

Look at the sections on your statement of earnings that list your pretax and after-tax deductions. Pretax deductions typically include such items as 401k contributions and group medical insurance premiums. Some common after-tax deductions include voluntary payroll deductions for miscellaneous employer benefits such as group legal services, meals, loan payments and third party-administered services such as supplemental insurance coverage.

Add your statutory payroll deductions, which typically include amounts for federal and state taxes as well as Medicare and Social Security withholding.

Calculate your actual earned salary amount for the pay period by adding your net pay amount and all of your deductions. This is your gross pay amount.

Multiply your gross pay amount for the pay period by the total number of pay periods you have per year. For example, an employee who is paid biweekly has 26 pay periods during a 12-month period, whereas an employee who is paid on a bimonthly basis has 24 pay periods for the year. This figure is your annual gross salary amount.
