How to Install Bullet Resistant Fiberglass

Bullet resistant fiberglass is a type of glass that is sometimes installed in restaurants, office buildings and other public structures. This type of glass is much thicker than regular glass and can withstand the speed and force of a bullet. Installing this type of glass is similar to installing any other type. The proper measurements must be made so the correct-sized pieces can be installed into the opening. Bullet resistant fiberglass must also be sealed after installation to ensure there are no gaps between the pieces. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Run a tape measure along the length and width of the area where you will be installing the bullet resistant fiberglass. Record both measurements so the proper amount of fiberglass can be purchased for installation.

    • 2

Pick up the large sheet of fiberglass and have a helper set it in the opening. The pieces of fiberglass can be specially made to any size so you do not have to attempt to attach two pieces together. Center it in the opening and verify that it fits properly.

    • 3

Slide a tube of exterior window and door sealant into a caulk gun. Press it down firmly into place. Cut off the tip of the sealant at a 45 -egree angle with a utility knife. Have a helper hold the glass in the proper place, then line up the sealant at any corner of the fiberglass.

    • 4

Push the trigger and release the caulk from the gun. Run a thin 1/8-inch bead across the entire perimeter of the window. Continue all the way around until you reach the beginning point. Move to the inside of the house and repeat the exact same process to help hold the window in place.

    • 5

Wipe away any excess sealant that has squirted onto the fiberglass window with a clean rag. Inspect the window and verify it is secure in place and does not move around. Let it dry overnight before hanging anything from it.
