A beard can draw attention to your face and be the finishing touch to your look. The facial hair protects your face and keeps it warm. Instead of growing a full beard, you can grow a pencil beard, also known a chin strip. Instructions

    • 1

Take a hot shower. The steam from the shower helps soften facial hairs and opens your facial pores. As an alternative, wet a washcloth with hot water. Place the washcloth on your beard and wait up to five minutes before removing it.

    • 2

Dip your shaving brush in water and apply shaving cream to it. Apply the shaving cream to your beard using circular motions of the brush. Use clean fingers to apply shaving cream if you don't have a brush. Wait two minutes so the cream can help soften your facial hairs.

Outline your pencil beard in the shaving cream. Use your fingers to draw vertical lines in the shaving cream from the bottom of your lip down to the bottom of your chin. These lines act as a guide so you know where to stop shaving. Start with lines that are further apart, because you can always narrow them later on.

Shave the hairs outside of your outline. Use a sharp razor blade and shave in the direction of the hair growth; shaving against the hair growth can trigger ingrown hairs. Pull your skin taut with your non-dominant hand and shave with your dominant hand. Rinse your razor blade frequently while shaving to avoid hair build-up on the blade.

Wash your face with water and pat it dry with a clean towel.

    • 6

Brush your pencil beard in the direction of the hair growth. Use scissors to trim the hairs shorter if desired. Use clippers as an alternative. If the hairs of your pencil beard are very short, avoid shaving over the area so your hair can grow.

Apply a soothing aftershave cream to the shaved area.
