How to: Cast-Off Stitching

How to: Cast-Off Stitching thumbnail
Keep your scarf from going on forever by casting off stitches.

Casting off is the last step of a knitting project. When you cast off your knit stitches you are binding the edge so the stitches can't come unraveled. Another name for casting off is binding off. Just as you put the stitches on your needles when you cast on, you take them off the needles when you bind off. Although there are many methods of casting off, including sewing and crochet, the most basic method requires no extra tools and works for most projects.

Instructions

    • 1

Knit the first two stitches of the last right-side row. This is the side of your knitting that faces out. You will now have two stitches on your right needle.

    • 2

Pick up the first stitch on the right needle with the tip of the left needle.

    • 3

Use the left needle to lift the first stitch over the second and off the needle. The first stitch is now bound off.

    • 4

Knit the next stitch off the left needle and onto the right.

    • 5

Lift the second stitch over the third stitch and off the needle.

    • 6

Continue knitting one stitch and binding it off with the previous stitch until you come to the end of the row. Your right needle will have one stitch left, and your left needle will be free. Break the yarn and wrap the tail behind the last stitch. Thread it through the stitch like you were threading a needle. Pull it tight to make a knot and end the bind off.
