How to Make a Yarn Bobbin
Knitting projects using intarsia and fair isle techniques require you to use multiple skeins of yarn at once. This is also true for crochet color work. If you find that your skeins get tangled, yarn bobbins are the answer. A bobbin holds a small ball of yarn and hangs freely from the back of your work as you knit or crochet. While different styles of bobbins are plentiful online and in stores, you can also make your own out of cardboard.

1
Draw a block-letter, capital H on a piece of cardboard. The H should be slightly smaller than the palm of your hand.
-
2
Cut out the H with scissors.
-
-
3
Snip a small vertical cut on the upper left leg of the H. The length of the cut depends on the size of your yarn. Make the cut long enough so that you can tuck the strand of yarn into it.
-
4
Wind your working yarn around the middle bar of the H. You can wind up to two yards of yarn.
-
5
Tuck the working strand into the vertical cut you made, leaving a 14-inch tail. When you need additional yarn from the bobbin, unwind more and tuck it into the cut.
