How to Negotiate a Relocation When You Can't Sell Your House
In some businesses, relocating from time to time is an expectation and a requirement. Regardless of how you generally feel about relocating, if you are being forced to relocate and your home isn't selling, you may find the situation less than desirable. Take this predicament into consideration when negotiating your move, ensuring that you get the best offer you can from your employer.

1
Ask about your options. Don't hide the fact that you are having difficulty selling your house from your employer. Instead, be upfront and honest about the situation, telling him that your home hasn't sold and explaining the problem this creates for you. Inquire as to whether the move absolutely must happen now or if it can be delayed until the home sells.
-
2
Request that your company pay for staging instead of taking on the expense yourself. Staging with fine furnishings may help your home sell and might be a necessity if you plan to move and then sell your home, as vacant homes are notoriously difficult to sell.

3
Inquire as to home-selling services. Some companies offer their relocated employees home-selling services, paying for the employee's real estate fees and hiring a service to take on most of the challenges of the selling process. Ask your employer to pick up the tab for such a service if your mortgage is still hanging over your head.
-
4
Require a more sizable moving allowance. If moving before you home sells puts you in a financial pickle, require that your employer pick up more of the costs associated with this move. Explain your predicament to your employer when making this request and tell him how this extra money would help. For example, if you are requesting enough extra money to pay your current mortgage for two months after you move, tell your employer how you arrived at this figure.
