How to Boost Supercharged Miatas

How to Boost Supercharged Miatas thumbnail
The Miata was introduced in 1989.

The Miata is a small two-seater economy roadster from Mazda, also known as the MX-5. A supercharger is an aftermarket part that forces oxygen into the engine, burning more fuel and ultimately increasing the power. The supercharger, however, has very little to do with boosting a Miata with a dead battery. A supercharged Miata is no different than any other Miata when it comes to getting a boost.

Instructions

  1. Using a Second Vehicle

    • 1

Position the second vehicle (that will assist with the boost) head to head with the Mazda.

    • 2

Attach the red (positive) jumper cable to the Mazda's positive battery terminal.

    • 3

Attach the other end of the red (positive) jumper cable to the second car's positive battery terminal.

    • 4

Attach the black (negative) jumper cable to the second car's negative battery terminal.

    • 5

Attach the other end of the black (negative) cable to a smooth, unpainted metal surface on the Mazda. Do not attach the cable to the negative terminal unless you want to see some sparks.

    • 6

Start the second car. Let it run for 3 to 5 minutes. This charges the Miata's battery.

    • 7

Disconnect the negative terminal from the Mazda. Disconnect the negative terminal from the second car. Disconnect the positive terminal from the second car. Disconnect the positive terminal from the Mazda. During this process, the ends of the terminals must not touch each other or metal.

    • 8

Start the Mazda. It should start right away. Drive the car around for 20 to 30 minutes, this fully charges the battery.

    Use a Boost Kit

    • 9

Place the boost kit next to the vehicle. A boost kit is a battery or outlet powered kit used to boost cars.

    • 10

Connect the positive and negative cables of the boost kit to the positive and negative terminals on the battery.

    • 11

Plug in and/or turn on the boost kit. Allow the kit to charge the battery.

    • 12

Turn off the kit after 3 to 5 minutes.

    • 13

Disconnect the kit from the battery and turn it off and/or unplug it. Start the Mazda. It should start right away. Drive the car around for 20 to 30 minutes; this fully charges the battery.
