Dripping Delta single-handle shower fixtures are not only annoying, they can be expensive. A dripping faucet can waste thousands of gallons of water a year, wasting clean water and driving up your utility costs. If the hot water is leaking, the costs go even higher as heated water drips down the drain. You can usually repair a dripping Delta fixture by replacing the valve springs and seals. If you want to replace the springs and seals in a Delta single-handle shower fixture, all you need is some basic hand tools and an hour of free time.
Things You'll Need
- Phillips screwdriver
- Flat screwdriver
- Allen wrench
- Strap wrench
Turn off the water supply to the Delta single-handle shower fixture. Remove the decorative cap from the center of the handle, if your model is so equipped. Remove the Phillips or Allen retaining screw and pull the handle off the valve stem.
Pull the spacer and trim sleeve straight off the valve cartridge. Remove the spacer and O-ring behind the trim sleeve.
Unscrew the brass ring that holds the valve cartridge in the faucet body. Use a strap wrench to loosen the brass ring if it’s too tight to remove by hand.
Pull the cartridge assembly out of the faucet body.
Push the two ends of the valve cartridge together and turn them one-quarter turn counterclockwise. Pull the two ends apart to expose the valve seals and springs.
Pull the seals and springs out of the housing assembly. Replace the seals and springs in the Delta single-handle fixture with new springs of the correct size. Place the new springs and seals in the holes in the housing assembly.
Push the two ends of the cartridge together and turn them one-quarter turn clockwise. Insert the cartridge into the faucet body. Place the brass ring over the cartridge and turn it until it is finger tight. Tighten the brass ring an additional one-quarter turn with a strap wrench.
Place the O-ring, spacer, sleeve and spacer onto the valve. Place the handle on the valve stem, insert the retaining screw and tighten it. Place the decorative cap on the handle, if so equipped.
