How to Advertise as a Photographer

How to Advertise as a Photographer thumbnail
Marketing your service is vital to finding success.

While some photographers work directly for a larger company, many work for themselves as independent contractors and small business people. If you choose to set up your own photography studio instead of working at a more established one, you will have the added challenge of creating advertisements for yourself. By engaging in effective advertising, you can likely draw more customers to your studio.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider your likely customers. While you likely will accept any customer who comes, you must consider who your largest customer base will be to determine where you should place your advertisements. If, for example, you are a skilled baby photographer, you may wish to place your ads in local parenting magazines. Conversely, if graduation photos are your thing, advertising in the programs for local high school productions may be a better choice.

    • 2

Tailor your advertisements to different photo-worthy events. Instead of simply advertising yourself as a photographer and allowing ad viewers to think of occasions for which they may need you, make some suggestions. For example, state in your ad that you are available for graduation photo sessions or that you specialize in photographing newborns if these are your skill sets.

    • 3

Include images in your advertisements. As a photographer, you know firsthand the impact of images. Include at least one image in all ads as an example of your work. If you have more space, include a collection.

    • 4

Include competitive pricing information to make your services seem appealing. While you don't need to lay out all of your prices, giving ad viewers a hint as to your pricing, particularly if it is low, may make them more inclined to turn to you for their photo needs. Include a base price by making a statement such as, "Wedding packages starting from $400."

    • 5

List your contact information prominently. Don't hide your name and number, but instead place them in large, bold print on your add. If potential customers have to look too hard to figure out how to contact you, they will likely give up the effort.
