DIY Traction Bars for a Civic

Traction bars help stiffen the underside of a vehicle, preventing what is known as "wheel hop" and allowing your vehicle to accelerate in a smoother fashion. Traction bars also help stabilize the suspension of a vehicle. You can install traction bars on your Honda Civic in under an hour if you have the appropriate tools. Traction bars can be purchased at most automotive stores or online. Be warned that traction bars do not prevent your wheels from spinning out.

Instructions

    • 1

Raise the Civic with a jack and place two jack stands at the front of the vehicle. Remove the jack.

    • 2

Remove the metal frame used to jack the vehicle. There is one on both sides of the Civic and they are held in by three bolts. Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts.

    • 3

Install the metal frames included with the traction bar kit. The frame has a slot that is used for installing the actual traction bars. Install the frames on both sides.

    • 4

Loosen the smaller bolt on the bracket of the axle on both sides of the vehicle.

    • 5

Place the traction bars on the slots of the metal frames. Make sure they line up with the slots and secure it by installing the washers and bolts.

    • 6

Install the longer bolt that came with the traction bar kit to the axle, making sure it connects the traction bar as well.

    • 7

Remove the jack stands and lower the Civic with a jack.
