How to Troubleshoot the Top Burner on a Kenmore Oven

Kenmore ovens come with four top burners arranged on the oven surface. Due to the frequent heating and cooling over time, surface burners are often the first parts to go bad on an oven or stove. If one of your top burners stops heating, a simple electrical test lets you know if the part must be replaced. Use a multimeter to check the wiring inside the burner. If you do not own a multimeter, buy one at an electronics store. Simple models typically cost much less than a service call by a technician who will perform the same test. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off all the controls on the Kenmore and wait for the appliance to cool if you have been using other burners.

    • 2

Lift the burner you want to test by the edge and pull it straight out of the socket in the oven surface.

    • 3

Set the multimeter to test for an ohm reading.

    • 4

Hold the two test rods on the end of the multimeter to the two wire terminals on the end of the Kenmore element. No reading or a maximum reading indicates a disruption in the circuit and the element is bad. Take the part with you to Sears, which sells replacement parts for this brand, or to an appliance repair shop for identifying the correct replacement part.
