How to Refinish a Wood Floor With a Square Buff Sander
Hardwood floors add rich, warm color to any room in your home. They add both style and elegance and match most any decor. Over time, your hardwood floors can become dull and scratched. The best way to address these problems is to refinish your wood floors. One tool to remove all of the old finish on your floors is a square buff sander. The square buff sander is an orbital sander that allows you to sand into corners more easily than a traditional round sander. Does this Spark an idea?

Remove everything from the room before you begin refinishing.

Sweep or vacuum your hardwood floors to remove any dust or dirt.

Sand against the grain with your first pass of the sander. Work in small sections at a time. Start in one corner and move your way out to the other side of the room. Hold the sander on to the hardwood floors with a steady amount of pressure. Do not spend too long on one spot or you could burn the wood or cause uneven spots. Get close to the corners by pressing the sander up as close to the wall as you can get without touching the baseboards.

Run the sander with the grain for the second pass. Work in small sections and press the sander gently in long stokes up and down the grain of the wood.

Inspect the floor when you have made both passes. Sand any spots that you missed with fine grit sandpaper.

Sweep or vacuum up the dust.

Apply a layer of polyurethane using a paint roller. Start in the corner and apply the finish with the grain. Work in small sections. Start in the corner furthest from the door and work toward the door so you do not get trapped in the room while the floor dries.

Wait at least 24 hours for the first coat to dry and apply a second coat.

Run a buffer over the entire floor. Turn the buffer on and gently lower it to the floor. Keep it moving in a side-to-side motion. Start in one corner and work your way out toward the door. Work in small 3-foot sections.

Wait at least 24 hours before you put all of your furniture back and begin walking on the floors.
