1
Check the brake fluid level to see if the fluid is running low. Add brake fluid up to the manufacturer's recommended brake fluid level if the level is low. Check the rubber hose below the brake fluid container to see if there are any leaks along the length of the hose.

2
Pull the oil dipstick out of the engine and wipe the tip of the stick with a dry rag. Insert the dipstick fully back into the engine, then pull out the stick again to see the oil level. Open the oil cap and pour additional oil into the engine if the oil level is low.

3
Inspect each tire for any obvious signs of damage, such as cracks or cuts. Check the pressure of each tire with a tire gauge. Increase air pressure on any tire whose pressure is below the tire manufacturer's recommended tire pressure for a forklift.
-
4
Locate the hydraulic fluid container and check its fluid level. Add the proper type of hydraulic fluid if the fluid level is low. Check the hydraulic hose running from the container to the hydraulic pump to see whether there are any leaks along the length of the hose.

5
Inspect the body of the forklift and look for any obvious signs of structural damage. Forklifts transport heavy loads, which can cause structural damage resulting from metal fatigue. Look for signs of cracking or misaligned body parts. Check whether the forks and mast (the vertical part of the forklift) are bent or cracked.

6
Remove each battery terminal clamp from each battery post with a wrench. Clean each clamp with a battery post cleaning tool. Wash each terminal with water to remove leftover sediments. Replace each clamp onto each battery terminal post and tighten each clamp firmly.
-
7
Press the horn button and the alarm button to test each device for sound. These devices are important in keeping people around a forklift safe because they warn people of the forklift's presence.
-
8
Park the forklift on an inclined surface and pull its hand brake. Check if the forklift will not move and if the brake will hold the forklift on an inclined surface. Have the parking brake adjusted if the brake can't hold the forklift in position.
-
9
Drive the forklift and check for any sudden change in speed or erratic speed. Have the motor checked if the forklift suddenly increases or decreases in speed by itself.
