How to Color Text on Facebook Chat

As of August 2011, you cannot change the font color of the text when you're chatting on Facebook's instant message feature. Even if you place HTML code around the text to change the color, the system won't read it. You can, however, alter the text to appear in boldface, which makes its default black color appear thicker and darker. You need to enter the command to make the text appear bold for every chat message you send; you cannot automatically set all your messages to appear this way.

Instructions

    • 1

Sign in to your Facebook account.

    • 2

Click the Chat link in the bottom right-hand corner of the page, then select the name of a friend with whom you want to chat.

    • 3

Type an asterisk by pressing "Shift+8." Type your message, and then type another asterisk. For example, if your message was, "Hi! How are you? I haven't talked to you in ages!" you would type *Hi! How are you? I haven't talked to you in ages!*

    • 4

Press the "Enter" key to send your message. The text appears in bold type.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for each message you want to contain bold text.

Tips & Warnings

  • You don't need to make your entire message bold. You can make individual words or sentences bold by placing asterisks around selected words or sentences. For instance, in a message such as, "Hi! Where have you been?" you might only want the word "where" to appear bold. You would therefore type: Hi! *Where* have you been?

  • To make the sentence "Great to hear from you" in the message "Hi there! Great to hear from you. What's going on?" appear in bold, you would type: Hi there! *Great to hear from you.* What's going on?
