How to Make a Leather Belt & Measure Your Waist

How to Make a Leather Belt & Measure Your Waist thumbnail
You can make your own leather belt and customize it any way you want.

You can easily measure your own waist and make yourself a custom leather belt with just a few hand tools and a belt blank. Belt blanks are strips of leather that have holes cut in them to accommodate belt buckles. If this is your first belt project, consider making a simple plain belt and using leather dye to customize it. You can also stamp the belt with leatherworking tools for added artistry. You can purchase leatherworking stamps or else use any tool that will leave an impression on the leather without cutting it.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your waist with a fiberglass tape measure that's designed for sewing. If you don't have a good tape measure, use a piece of cotton or nylon string. Wrap the string around your waist and mark it with a pen where the end touches the rest of the string. To measure for a belt, put on the clothes that you will be wearing with the belt and take another measurement. Write down your measurements.

    • 2

Purchase a leather strap or belt blank in the width of your choice. Straps are typically plain, without any hardware or holes, while belt blanks will have a center hole to allow for the tongue of a buckle. They may have snaps so that you can change buckles easily. Leather for belts is available in widths from one to three inches. Make sure that your buckle will fit on the belt.

    • 3

Prepare the leather for stamping by wetting it. Do not saturate the belt blank with water; you don't want it sopping wet. Leather that is ready to be worked will feel cool to the touch. Keep a paper towel handy and dampen it with clean water. Use the paper towel to dab water onto the belt to keep it from drying out too much while you're working.

    • 4

Snap your buckle onto the belt. Measure the belt by placing the tape measure at the end of the buckle. Use the pen to mark a small dot on the center of the belt at the spot that corresponds to your waist measurement. Add dots in 1 to 2-inch increments on either side of this first dot. Measure carefully and make sure the marks are in a straight line before you make any holes. Use the awl or hole punch to make holes in the belt.

    • 5

Stamp the belt, if desired. Use leathercrafting tools, or alternatively, any tool that will mark the leather. Place the stamp squarely on the leather and tap it with the hammer just hard enough to make an impression. Do not use anything to stamp with that will cut the leather; you just want to dent it. Finish decorating the belt.

    • 6

Dye or stain your leather belt with products that are made specifically for leather. Dyes can either be alcohol based or acrylic. Acrylics usually come in a wider range of colors, including metallic shades. Follow the instructions on the product label. When the belt is thoroughly dry, you can add an edge finish if desired. Optional decorations can include rhinestones, rivets and decorative holes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Measure twice before cutting anything.

  • Have someone else measure your waist.

  • Clean off a work area. You will need a sturdy surface if you are going to stamp the leather. Make sure you have adequate lighting.

  • Don't suck in your stomach when measuring your waist.

  • Don't use a cheap tape measure that can stretch.

  • Do not work on top of good furniture or anything that will be discolored if it gets wet.
