How to Close AIM in AOL
America Online (AOL) messaging service lets you create a custom name associated with an AOL email address. You must close the AIM screen name and avoid signing in to the account to permanently remove the screen name. AIM names are cancelled due to inactivity, so you delete the name from the AIM program and the account is removed from your AOL email account.

Click the Windows "Start" button and select "All Programs." Click "America Online," then click the AOL shortcut to open the software. Log in to your AOL email account.

Click the AIM screen name you want to delete in your list of screen names. Remove the check mark next to "Remember Me" and "Remember My Password" options.

Click "Delete" to remove the name from the AOL account's list of screen names. It takes several months for the account to be removed due to inactivity.
