How to Add Oil to a Horseshoe Tank

How to Add Oil to a Horseshoe Tank thumbnail
Motorcycles, like automobiles, need an oil change from time to time.

Horseshoe oil tanks are typically installed on soft or hard-tail framed motorcycles with wide tires. The shape of the tank conforms to the bike's style. The horseshoe tank operates in the same fashion as any other motorcycle oil tank. The only difference is the horseshoe shape. As with all motorcycles, the oil level will get lower over time and you will need to add oil. Adding oil to a horseshoe oil tank on your motorcycle is a simple job.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place a drain pan underneath the oil tank drain plug to catch the oil. This is located at the bottom of the horseshoe tank.

    • 2

Remove the oil fill cap from the top of the horseshoe tank located on top. This will help the oil drain out faster.

    • 3

Remove the drain plug from the bottom of the tank using a fitting socket wrench. Allow the oil to completely drain out of the tank.

    • 4

Remove the oil filter cover and oil filter from the motorcycle. Because different motorcycles vary in construction, consult your manual for filter location specifics.

    • 5

Install a new oil filter. Replace the oil filter cover. Replace the oil drain plug.

    • 6

Fill the tank with appropriate oil to the recommended oil fill level. Consult your owner's manual for specifics. Replace the oil fill cap.

    • 7

Turn on the engine. Rev the engine up once or twice. Turn the engine off. Remove the oil fill cap and check the oil level on the cap-stick to ensure that the level is accurate.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check your oil level often to ensure proper future performance.

  • Horseshoe oil tanks can be custom built for your motorcycle.

  • Never start the engine with the oil-fill plug off of the tank. This will cause oil to spew everywhere.
