Instructions

    • 1

Design a miniature golf course. Roughly sketch out the path or the location of the holes on the course. Decide how many holes your course will have.

    • 2

Mow the grass in the yard. Well-trimmed grass creates the best putting turf. If the terrain in the yard is rocky or sparse with grass, purchase large squares of inexpensive garden turf at the hardware store to use as putting greens.

    • 3

Create the holes. There are two options for golf course holes: placed below the surface or left on top. If underground holes are desired, dig holes just deep enough to hold small plastic cups as a receptacles. However, if digging several small holes in your yard is not an appealing option, use tin cans and play above the surface. Decorate the cans with construction paper or decorative foam, and lay the can on its side where a hole is planned. Putt golf balls directly into the cans -- no real holes necessary.

Add some obstacles for a bit of a challenge ... and more fun. Obstacles do not have to be expensive, items around the house or already in the yard can be used. For example, place a hole on the other side of a tree, use lawn chairs or garden gnomes. Or use a decorated cardboard box propped up with a wooden dowel near a hole. If more expensive or elaborate obstacles are preferred, there are online stores that offer some fun items.

Purchase some inexpensive putters. Sporting goods stores sell inexpensive putters that will work great for a miniature golf course at a birthday party. Only one or two putters are needed, as guests can take turns using them. Also, discount or dollar stores typically have cheap plastic golf club sets or putters -- perfect to use on a makeshift golf course at a birthday party.

Decorate the course with flags. Attach triangular pieces of of felt or cloth to inexpensive wooden skewers. Write numbers on the material. Using the sharp end of the skewer, insert the flag directly into the ground next to the hole.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use garden hoses or pieces of wood or lumber as barriers behinds the holes, if desired.
