How to Keep My Privacy in Facebook

Keep your privacy in Facebook to prevent people who don't know you and aren't members of your immediate Facebook friend list from gaining access to your personal information via your Facebook account. Facebook's "Privacy Settings" menu allows you to customize the site's default privacy settings to make your profile information more or less private, depending on your preference.

      Sign in to your Facebook account. Choose "Privacy Settings" from the "Account" drop-down menu.

      Click "Customize Settings" at the bottom of the "Sharing on Facebook" section. In the "Things I share" section, view and edit privacy settings for items you share on Facebook. For example, edit who can see posts you make or your birthday. Click the drop-down menu next to each profile item to adjust its privacy settings. If you choose "Customize," a window pops up where you make your changes and then click "Save Setting."

      Click "Back to Privacy." Select "View Settings" under "Connecting on Facebook" to edit settings for how people locate you on Facebook. Click the drop-down menu next to each item, including "Search for you on Facebook" and "Send you messages," to edit the corresponding settings.

      Select "Back to Privacy" and then choose "Edit your settings" under "Apps and Websites" to edit the extent to which applications and other non-Facebook tools can communicate with you. Click the button next to each setting to adjust or change it.

      Click "Back to Privacy." Click "Edit Your Lists" under "Block Lists" to add or remove individuals from the the block list. When you block someone on Facebook, it prevents him from communicating with you or viewing any content you post to the site.
