How to Make Reusable Wipes

Make your own baby wipes to be friendly to your pocket book, the environment and your baby's bottom. Disposable wipes often contain harsh detergents or alcohol that dry out a baby's skin. Daily use of disposable wipes can lead to an unnecessary increase in your grocery bill, and an unnecessary increase of waste in your local landfill. Use scrap materials to make a steady supply of reusable baby wipes that will last for months and that you can wash at your own convenience.

Things You'll Need

  • Scrap cotton fabrics
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Container or resealable bag
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tsp. liquid baby soap
  • 1 to 2 tsp. baby oil
  • Plastic bags

Instructions

    • 1

Collect some soft, cotton fabrics, such as baby washcloths, flannel shirts, old diapers or receiving blankets.

    • 2

Cut fabric into washcloth-sized pieces. Fold over and hem the edges of fabrics that unravel.

    • 3

Fold the fabric pieces and put them in a container with a tight-fitting lid, such as a leftover baby wipe box, plastic food storage container or a resealable plastic food storage bag.

    • 4

Mix water and a mild liquid baby soap in a bowl. Add baby oil if desired and stir to incorporate the contents.

    • 5

Pour the liquid over the reusable baby wipes until they're all dampened, but don't wet them so much that they're soggy. When you pick one up, you want it moist but not dripping.

    • 6

Cover or close your baby wipes tightly. Carry an additional plastic bag to hold dirty wipes. Wash them on your normal laundry day or as often as necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your wipes begin to dry out, moisten them with a little more water.

  • Don't leave wet wipes for days or weeks at a time in an enclosed container or it may cause mold or mildew. Moisten wipes every day or two on an as-needed basis and use them before wetting another batch.
