How to Moderate Staff Retreats

How to Moderate Staff Retreats thumbnail
Office relationships can be strengthened by requiring teamwork activities at company retreats.

A staff retreat is an effective way to boost company morale and teamwork, while allowing employees to socialize and have fun at the same time. It is important to build a corporate culture that is conducive to teamwork and positive attitudes, and a retreat is a great way to do both. The success of any retreat, however, depends in no small measure on the role of the moderator. This individual helps to direct retreat activities and ensures that everything goes as planned.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a formal agenda and pass one out to each staff member attending the retreat. The agenda should clearly indicate all activities that are to take place and include information pertaining to time and place. This will help the staff to stay on track with the planned events.

    • 2

Present retreat-related information to employees in a timely manner to stimulate their thinking. If you have a team activity planned or a motivational speaker coming, present participants with pertinent materials beforehand. Doing so will give staff members a chance to align their thinking with the topic or topics to be discussed.

    • 3

Keep the group focused and make sure it stays on task. Set aside time for socializing and fun activities so the employees stay on task.

    • 4

Enforce rules. Make sure the employees know that the same rules that apply in the workplace apply on the retreat and that they can be written up if they do not follow procedure.

    • 5

Make sure everyone is participating and getting a chance to speak up. Don't allow one person to totally dominate a team. Have each employee take turns leading the team.

    • 6

Document the results. If there was poor behavior or really good behavior make a note of it so you can give it to your superior.
