How to Guide a Forklift in a Side Shift thumbnail
Forklifts can be used to pick up lumber.

A forklift is used in warehouses and small businesses. Most forklifts run on propane, but some use gas or electricity. They are used to pick up large objects, such as concrete and bunks of lumber. Driving a forklift is similar to driving a car. It has a steering wheel, gas pedal and a brake. Only certified drivers can operate a forklift. When you are driving a forklift, it may sometimes be necessary to side shift the forks so you can center the load you are picking up. This can be completed by operating the levers next to the steering wheel. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Hop on the forklift and sit down in the seat. Adjust the seat, if necessary, so your feet are comfortable reaching the pedals. Push the lever on the left side of the seat back to move the seat back and forward to move it forward.

    • 2

Buckle up your seat belt and push down on the button to the left of the steering wheel just below where the key is located. Turn the key to the right while you are pushing the button and turn on the forklift. Press down on the gas pedal to ensure there is gas in the tank.

    • 3

Push the knob on the left side of the steering wheel up to begin moving forward. Press down on the gas with your right foot to accelerate the forklift and press the brake on your left to stop the forklift. Drive forward until your forks are right next to the object you are going to pick up. Flip the knob on the left side of the steering wheel to its starting position, so the forklift does not move forward.

    • 4

Drive under the object until the shaft at the end of your forks is butting up against the object without pressing too firmly into it. Press the lever on the far right of your forklift up to shift the forks to the left and pull it down to shift the forks to the right. Side shift accordingly so you are centered under the object.

    • 5

Pull down on the lever closest to the steering wheel and pick up the object with the forks. Flip the knob and begin moving forward. Guide the object through a small area. Push either up or down on the far right lever to move the object from one side to the other, making it easier to guide your way through the tight area.

Tips & Warnings

  • The handles and levers on the forklift may vary depending on what type of forklift you have.
