How to Break Aluminum if Melting
Aluminum comes in many different forms and is used for various applications. It is common in HVAC and refrigeration along with duct work. If you have a lot of scrap aluminum and it is difficult to break down, you can melt it. Melting aluminum will make it much easier to break into smaller pieces so it can be properly thrown away. 1
Set up a charcoal grill in an area away from children. Fill up the charcoal grill with pieces of scrap lumber. Verify the lumber is not pressure treated. Pressure-treated lumber should not be burned due to the chemicals.
-
2
Arrange all of the lumber on the grill and light it. This will help create a larger fire so the big pieces of aluminum can be melted easier.

3
Set the pieces of aluminum in the grill once the flame has risen up above the surface of the grill. Stack more wood on top of the aluminum so it is pressed down farther into the flame. This will also allow more air flow and prevent smoke from the fire.
-
4
Step back and allow the flame to begin to burn and melt the aluminum. Melting time will vary, but may take less than 10 minutes, so look for the aluminum to start to drip underneath the grill. Put out the fire with a hose when this happens.

5
Remove the metal from the grill with pliers. Pick it up, being careful not to touch the grill with your hands because it will be hot. Hammer down slightly on the melted aluminum pieces to break them even more.
