How to Attach Bead Fringe on Pillows thumbnail
Attracive bead fringe can add a touch or original beauty to an old pillow.

Adding fringe to various household furnishings gives a bit of bling and a splash of decorative originality to your home. Many craft and fabric stores carry beaded fringe on large bolts, so you can buy it already put together or you can choose your own beads and trim to make something completely original. Consider where the pillow will spend most of its time and how much wear it will receive to determine the kind of beaded fringe you use and how long you want it.

Instructions

  1. Handmade Bead Fringe

    • 1

Measure the perimeter of a pillow and determine how far apart each bead fringe will be and how many beads will be on each fringe. You may want to alternate short strands with longer strands.

    • 2

String your bead strands and sew each strand on the pillow individually. Measure between strands to keep the fringe distance uniform around the pillow. Anchor each strand into the seam of the pillow. Knot each strand individually so that all the fringe won't come off if one of the strands comes off the pillow.

    • 3

Continue around the pillow, beading and sewing each strand until you have completed the circuit of the pillow.

    • 4

Use a sewing machine to carefully stitch around the pillow over the area where your strand attaches to reinforce the pillow edge and the strand connection to the pillow.

    • 5

      Repeat with each pillow.

    Premade Bead Fringe

    • 6

Measure the perimeter of each pillow and add and extra inch to determine how much fringe to buy per pillow.

    • 7

Cut the fringe to the correct measurement and carefully pin the trim edge to the edge of the pillow. Overlap the edges of the trim where they come together. This looks best if you place the overlap at a corner.

    • 8

Use a zipper foot to machine stitch the trim on the pillow or hand sew the trim to the edge of the pillow. Sew two complete revolutions to insure that the fringe is firmly attached and a single loose thread won't cause the fringe to disconnect from the pillow.
