Masking tape helps make many different painting jobs easier.

A French manicure is the little black dress of nail designs. The elegant nail style looks appropriate during any occasion. Giving yourself a French manicure requires a steady hand, because the white tips can easily smudge, if not done correctly. Commercial French tip guide strips make your home manicure a lot easier; the stencils tell you exactly which part of your nails to paint, and they give you an even finish. Instead of purchasing guide strips, which can only be used once, use masking tape to make your own. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut or rip off 10 pieces of masking tape that are at least 1-inch long. Tape the pieces on the edge of a table, so you can easily remove them.

    • 2

Look at the shape of your nails and decide which nail tip design you want. If your nails are square, a straight nail tip looks better. If you have rounded nails, a rounded, crescent moon-shaped tip looks best.

    • 3

Cut the masking tape pieces into the design you prefer. Remove one piece of tape from the table and hold it in your non-dominant hand. Hold scissors in your dominant hand and use them to shape one edge of the masking tape. Try to make all the pieces look similar. Tape the pieces of masking tape back on the edge of the table. Avoid cutting the masking tape, if you just want a straight nail tip.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have time, draw the shape of each nail tip on the masking tape before cutting it, to get even strips

  • Thoroughly press the masking tape on your nails when giving yourself a French manicure. If you don't, your polish may end up bleeding underneath the tape.
