How to Decorate a Pillow With Ribbons & Lace
A plain pillow can easily be dressed up by adding ribbons and lace. This is a simple way to decorate uninspiring pillows. Purchase lace trim or ribbon at your local craft or fabric store in styles and colors that match your home. While lace needs to be sewn on by hand, you can use a simple fabric glue to attach the ribbons to the pillows. Does this Spark an idea?

Adding Ribbon
-
1
Lay the ribbon on the pillow where you want it to go. If you want one ribbon to wrap all the way around the pillow, pin the first end to the back of the pillow, then wrap the ribbon around the pillow. The ribbon can be wrapped vertically or horizontally around the pillow. Make sure to keep the ribbon straight as you pin it in place on the pillow.
-
2
Cut the ribbon so the ends overlap by about 1 inch. You can do just one ribbon, or you can make several stripes using several different ribbons.

3
Starting at one end of the ribbon, remove a few pins. Put a thin line or a few dots of glue on the back of the ribbon. Press it gently against the pillow. Remove a few more pins and repeat.
-
4
Fold under the edge of the ribbon when you get to the end. Glue it in place, being careful to line up the two ends of the ribbon so they meet with no gap.
Adding Lace
-
5
Lay the lace on the pillow in the location you want it. You can simply trim the edges of the pillow, or lay the lace across the face of the pillow. Cut the lace to the length you need.
-
6
Pin the lace in place on the pillow. Thread your needle with a matching color thread. For example, if your lace is white, use white thread. Cream colored lace needs a cream thread.
-
7
Sew the lace in place using a whipstitch.

Tips & Warnings
Ribbon and lace can both be added to the same pillow.
You can whipstitch the ribbon in place, as well.
Add a ribbon bow or flower to the front of the pillow for a fancier look.
Lace does not have to be a border; a lace doily looks nice on the front of a pillow.
