How to Animate a Spider in Maya

3-D computer generated characters of many sorts are often seen in both live action and fully animated films, as well as in video games. In addition to all the other factors that go into producing effective animation, the animator has to make sure the movement of the figure is as realistic as possible. With two-legged figures like people or anthropometric animals or robots, this is a relatively simple process. With four-legged figures, things become a bit more complicated. However, the real challenge can be in animating multi-legged creatures like an eight-legged spider.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the Maya application. Select "File" from the menu and click "Open." In the dialog that pops up, browse to and open the figure model you want to use. It has to be one with a posing rig. "IK" must be on to keep the feet in position when they are not being moved.

Click on the 10th frame in the timeline. Drag the spider's body slightly forward. Use the "Control Handles" on the legs to move the right front leg forward. Slip the second leg on the right and move the third leg forward. On the left side, move the second and fourth legs forward.

Move another 10 frames forward in the timeline and drag the body slightly forward. Move the legs you didn't move in Step 2. Continue this process to create a walk cycle. Save your work.
