How to Use a Staple As a Wire

How to Use a Staple As a Wire thumbnail
Twist old staples together to form small lengths of wire.

Staples are sold in numerous different lengths and diameters. The standard staple is a half-square with two sharp prongs. The staple is designed to hold wire against posts and when bent, staples hold stacks of paper. The purposing of standard staples is only limited to the imagination. Manipulating the shape of the staple creates a flat piece of wire and combining multiple lengths of the wire creates a single long wire. The staple is not an ideal replacement for spools of bailing wire but they are ideal for bundling small groups of electrical wire and other narrow diameter materials when other resources are not available. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Grab each end of one staple with a separate pair of needle nose pliers. Pull on each end to straighten the staple into a single length of wire.

    • 2

Straighten a second staple with the pliers. Hold the two staples together with a small overlap. Pinch the overlapping section with one pair of pliers.

    • 3

Pinch the free end of one staple with the second pair of pliers. Hold the end in a stationary position and twist the pliers connected to the overlapping section. This twists the two staples together into a single piece of wire.

    • 4

Straighten and add a third staple to the wire with the twisting technique. Continue adding staples until you have reached a desired length.

    • 5

Wrap the wire around the objects being bundled or connected. Hold each end of the wire with one hand and cross the two end. Twist the two ends together to tighten the wire around the objects.

Tips & Warnings

  • Building wire from staples is a time consuming process. Use bailing wire in place of the staples whenever possible.

  • Do not use staples as electric wire. The metal is conductive but does not hold and transfer electricity well. Only use electrical wire to manage electric currents.
