How to Make a Bustier as a Costume
A simple bustier you make yourself as a costume is custom fit to your measurements. The bustier can be adapted to a classic costume like a pirate or wench, or something more modern like a sexy super hero. A standard color bustier can be interchangeable with different bottoms or accessories to change the costume and make it more versatile. Scrap material can be used for the bustier itself, and only simple sewing skills are needed to create it.

1
Measure your waist at two points: just below the breast, and just above the hips. Add 1/2-inch to the measurement for seam allowance.
-
2
Measure from the point just below your breast to your waist where you want the bustier to end. Add 1/2-inch to the measurement for seam allowance.

3
Cut a piece of fabric the dimensions of your body measurements. If you want a double layer bustier, cut two pieces: one for lining and one for the outside.
-
4
Fold the outer edges of the fabric to the inside. Press flat. If you are using two layers, stack the lining layer on the outer layer, wrong sides facing each other, seam allowances folded to the inside. Pin the top and bottom edges.
-
5
Cut the hook and eye strip to fit the length of the end of the fabric, which is the closure. Slip one side of the hook and eye strip onto one side of the seam allowance at the end of the fabric, and the corresponding strip on the other, so that when the bustier is brought around you they hook and close. Pin in place. If you are using two layers of fabric, put the strips between the layers.
-
6
Sew all the seams, top, bottom and the ends. Sew the hook and eye strips into the ends with the seam. You can use a sewing machine if you have one, or sew the seams by hand.
-
7
Try the bustier on for fit. Pair the bustier with a pair of tight black leggings and accessories for a super hero look, or with a billowy skirt for a wench costume.
