Custom group markers add visual impact and make your board unique.

There are many beautiful skins available for Invision Power Boards and one of the easiest ways to put your personal touch on a pre-made skin is with custom markers for user groups. Custom group markers can be especially valuable on a gaming or role-playing board as an immediate indicator of a user's status. You can add as many or as few groups and group markers as you like with the same simple process.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Create your group marker graphics in a graphics editing program. Save the files in .JPG, .PNG, or .GIF file format. There is no theoretical limit on the graphic's size, but most skins place the group marker directly under the user's avatar, so a good guideline is to make the group markers the same width as the maximum avatar width on your board. Invision Power Board default for avatar dimensions is 64 x 64 pixels.

    • 2

Log in to the message board with your Administrator account. Navigate to the Administrator Control Panel. In most Invision skins, the link to the Admin CP is near the top of the index page, just below the board's logo graphic.

    • 3

Scroll down to the fifth section in the left-hand menu of the Admin CP, Users and Groups. Click the link for User Title/Ranks.

    • 4

Click the Browse button in the bottom section of the User Title/Ranks screen. Navigate to your saved group marker graphics and select one, then click Open. Click Upload Pip. Repeat until all the group markers have been uploaded.

    • 5

Navigate to the Manage User Groups screen and click the Edit Groups link next to a group.

    • 6

Select the new member group marker from the Group Icon popup menu. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click the Complete Edit button.

    • 7

Repeat Steps 5 and 6 until all groups have had their custom markers assigned.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have graphics editing software on your computer, some photo storage websites offer a limited online graphics editor with a free account.
