How to Decorate Using Fabric on Walls

Fabric is an inexpensive alternative to painting and comes in handy if you are renting or if you want to frequently change the look of your home. You can cover an entire wall with fabric or just a portion of the wall as an accent. Select light fabrics with a print or color that go with your existing decor. For example, use fabric with an abstract print for a more modern home or go with a floral print for a more traditional look. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the wall with a damp sponge to remove any dust or dirt. Let the wall air dry. Measure the height and width of the wall area that you want to decorate with fabric.

    • 2

Cut a piece of lightweight fabric to meet the measurements you have taken, plus two inches on each side. Examples of lightweight fabrics include cotton and chintz.

    • 3

Pour fabric starch into a paint tray. Paint the top half of the wall area with a paint roller dipped in the starch in the paint tray. Apply the starch in an even, thin layer.

    • 4

Press the top half of the fabric into the starch on the wall. Insert a push pin through the top edge of the fabric and into the wall every 6 inches to hold the fabric in place as the starch dries.

    • 5

Apply the starch to the bottom half of the wall with the paint roller and press the bottom half of the fabric into place. Smooth any wrinkles or air bubbles with your hands.

    • 6

Let the fabric dry for 24 hours.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are using more than one panel of fabric to cover a wide area of the wall, apply the starch to the wall panel by panel instead of across the entire wall width. Make sure the pattern lines up on the panels, as you would if you were wallpapering.
