A peaceful trek through the woods can be spoiled by crossing the remains of an old lunch or colliding with a cross-country skier. A few rules of trail etiquette are needed - out of respect for both your surroundings and other winter recreationists.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ski Hats
  • Warm Clothes
  • Ski Gloves
  • Ski Poles
  • Snowshoes
  1. Step 1

Obey all trail signs. For example, steer clear of trails marked "closed."

  2. Step 2

Avoid snowshoeing directly on top of ski trails. Walk either on an established snowshoe trail or make your own next to the ski tracks.

  3. Step 3

Pack out everything you pack in.

  4. Step 4

Step off the side of the trail when resting. This will prevent an unexpected collision with skiers or snowmobiles.

  5. Step 5

Yield to cross-country skiers and snowmobiles. They are moving faster, they're bigger and they can cause a snowshoer bodily harm.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bring your pooch along (where allowed) but keep pets under control to avoid confrontations.
  • To avoid a collision, keep an ear out for the whine of snowmobiles and the schussing sound of skis, especially when rounding corners.
