How to Turn a Cabinet Into a Jewelry Armoire thumbnail
Decorative cabinets can make beautiful and unique jewelry armoires.

A jewelry armoire provides a neat, convenient place to store all of your jewelry items. If you have limited space or simply do not want to spend the money to buy a freestanding jewelry armoire, which can be expensive, you can create a customized jewelry armoire by converting an existing cabinet to hold all your baubles. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Trays (dividers, egg cartons, ice cube trays, etc.) for holding rings and earrings
  • Small to medium hooks with stick-on backs (rated for more than 1 pound of weight)
  • Stick-on mirror
  • String or ribbon
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Clean out the cabinet thoroughly, making sure to remove all dust and debris. Determine where it will be most convenient for you to place each type of item in your jewelry armoire. For example, trays for holding small items such as earrings and rings must go at the bottom of the armoire unless there's a shelf, while hooks for necklaces and bracelets should be higher up to prevent tangling.

Place a mirror on the inside of the cabinet door for easy, well-lighted viewing. Follow directions on the mirror's packaging instructions to attach it correctly and evenly.

    • 3

Place stick-on hooks along both interior sides of the cabinet, near the top. If your cabinet is tall enough, you may be able to place a second row of hooks 8 to 12 inches below the first set. Each hook should be approximately an inch apart from the ones on either side of it. These are for your necklaces and bracelets.

    • 4

Place one hook on either side of the back wall of your armoire. Cut string or ribbon so that it is several inches longer than the distance between those two hooks. Tie knots on either end of the ribbon or string to create loops that fit over the hooks. This creates a non-abrasive hanging area for bracelets or necklaces that do not open and won't fit over your hooks on their own. The ribbon can also come in handy for brooches or pins, which can be clipped to it.

Place your trays (or dividers) for rings and earrings on the bottom of the cabinet. If you are using stackable trays, such as ice cube trays or egg cartons, you can add as many as you like and stack them as high as you like. If you do not have a lot of these items, you may consider using small bowls, saucers or teacups to hold these items.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are using a large cabinet that already has drawers, you can place dividers in the drawers for earrings, rings and bracelets.

  • If you would rather have your earrings dangle, pick up a piece of thin wire mesh with small square openings and attach it to the inside of your jewelry armoire an inch or so away from the side. You can hook your earrings through the openings.

  • The benefit of using stick-on mirrors and hooks is that you will be able to remove these items from your armoire in the event you need to reconfigure it or decide to turn it back into a cabinet at a later date. There should be no lasting damage to the cabinet.
