1
Place a small piece of tape over the presser foot on the sewing machine. This will prevent the pleather from sticking to the metal as you sew.
-
2
Cut out the pattern pieces and place them over the pleather. Cut out the pattern pieces. Do not stick the pleather pieces together with straight pins, as this can create unsightly holes that you cannot cover up.

3
Cut out lining pieces from satin using the same pattern you did for the pleather. Sew the lining pieces to the pleather pieces before sewing the trench coat together.
-
4
Align the coat pieces, starting with the body of the coat. Use a half-inch seam allowance for all seams. Use thread the same color as the pleather. Add the sleeves and collar to the coat after sewing the torso.

5
Cut three or four vertical slits in one side of the trench coat 1 inch away from the edge of the fabric for buttons. Sew buttons to the opposite side of the trench aligning with the slits. Sew around the edges of the slit openings using the buttonhole setting on your machine.
-
6
Fold a 36-inch-by-4-inch piece of pleather in half. Sew the side seams closed, leaving a 2-inch gap. Turn the pleather inside out and sew the remaining opening closed. This will make the sash for the coat.
