How to Make a Tension Wrench

How to Make a Tension Wrench thumbnail
Tension wrenches work with some knob-based door locks.

A tension wrench is a basic component of any locksmith's tool kit. It applies tension to the tumblers in the lock, and the lock will often pop open when the wrench is twisted. This is especially true of small, inexpensive pad locks. These wrenches can sometimes be effective on household door locks as well. Commercially sold tension wrenches are available, but a version made quickly with a paper clip can be just as useful. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a two-inch paper clip on the table in front of you, with the closed side away from you.

    • 2

Pull the bottom leg down until it is perpendicular to the rest of the clip.

    • 3

Grip the tip of this leg with pliers. Twist your wrist clockwise a quarter turn while holding the pliers. This will bend the end of the paper clip to the left.

    • 4

Hold the paper clip in your hand with the extended leg up and pointing to the right.

    • 5

Grip the paper clip 1/4-inch above the end using the pliers. Rotate your hand counter-clockwise a quarter turn to bend the tip of the paper clip away from you.

Tips & Warnings

  • To use the tension wrench, insert it into the top of the key hole, and apply pressure. Twist slightly.
